This is a startup script to enable pppoed in a System V way. It is designed to
run on a RH6.x System and compatible (Mandrake, LinuxPPC, TurboLinux, etc ...).

Note. If you have 6.0 (not 6.1) a function in the script will not be found (check_device_down). Just comment it out.

HOW TO INSTALL:

1) You have to get a functionning pppoed, i.e. when you type pppoed as root,
you're connected.

2) Configure tour /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file with something like this:

DEVICE=eth0
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO""
IPADDR="0.0.0.0"

"/etc/rc.d/init.d/network" will have to be started, before pppoed can be activated.

3) Copy the included pppoed file in /etc/rc.d/init.d/

4) Stop networking (and pppoe!) if it was already activated:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/pppoed stop
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/network stop

5) Start networking.

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/network start

Do a ifconfig to check if it works properly you should have something like:

eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:00:00:00:00:00
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:33827 errors:7 dropped:2 overruns:0 frame:7
          TX packets:24119 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          Interrupt:14 Base address:0x1000

lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING  MTU:3924  Metric:1
          RX packets:404 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:404 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

Of course, the HWaddr will be different.

6) Start up pppoed:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/pppoed start

At that point you should have lo, eth0 and ppp0 activated (do a ifconfig to
confirm). It should be good to test the script [start/stop/restart/status]
before installing it in your startup scripts.

7) Install pppoe in all relevants /etc/rc.d/rc?.d/:

# chkconfig --level 16 pppoed off
# chkconfig --level 2345 pppoed on
