The preferable way as of version 0,48 is to run the Install_pppoe
script in the main directory
However, i wont stop you from installing it this way ;->

0) these instructions are valid for version 0.4*

They explain how to build a kernel with pppoed support as well
as building the user space helper program, pppoed.

1) untar the archive somewhere
	cd somewhere
	cp pppoed.tgz .
	tar -xzvf pppoed.tgz

The files ending with pppox (eg 2.3.33-pppox) are kernel
patches.

KERNEL COMPILE
-------------

2) Assuming your kernel sources are at: /usr/src/linux
for example in the case of the 2.2.13 patch, the kernel is version 2.2.13.
Lets say you have installed the pppoed.tgz at the absolute path:
/absolute-path/somewhere/ as defined in 1) above. Basically,
/absolute-path/somewhere/ is the output of pwd when you cd to
pppoed above.

	cd /usr/src/linux
	cat /absolute-path/somewhere/kernelversion-pppox | patch -b -p1

[kernelversion-pppox is the appropriate kernel patch for your kernel.
eg 2213-pppox is the patch for kernel 2.2.13]

The above will patch your kernel and create backups for each file
that was patched. In case of errors (hopefully shouldnt happen if you
use the correct kernel but might happen if you experiment patching other
kernels), overwrite the files with the backups (.orig) and try and figure
out the problem. Or simply goto to the relevant kernels that match the
patch eg 2.2.13 (stable release at this point)

3) Build the kernel and install your kernel. During config,
select "tty support for pppox" under "network devices"
Note you can select to build it as a module; i just select to build it
in.
Make sure that you have also turned on ppp support and your ethernet devices.

UPDATE: For the 2.3 kernels you will also have select
'PPP support for sync tty ports' under "network devices"

For 2.3 also read file PPP+kernel2.3 at this point if you have ppp
version less than 2.3.11

4) pppoed COMPILE
  ----------------

To build:
	./configure
	make
	make install
will move the created pppoed binary to /usr/local/bin/
This will also create the manpage as well.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
To create a Debian package:
	make debian
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
To create a rpm package:
	make rpm

See README.RPM for more info.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

5) You dont need this step if you made a "make install" above.

create /dev/pppox0:
	mknod /dev/pppox0 c 144 0
Currently, you can have upto 16 devices all with major number 144
and minor numbers starting at 0 eg pppox1 has minor number 1
If you need more devices, this is very easy to change (variable N_SES).

6) reboot using your new kernel
