This assumes you have read the INSTALL instructions.

Add the following line to your /etc/ppp/options file:

connect '/usr/src/pppoed/pppoed-0.45/pppoed/pppoed -G'

/usr/src/pppoed/pppoed-0.45/pppoed/pppoed is the path to where your
pppoed binary is located.

The above line allows you to start pppoed by invoking pppd.
You can just type /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/pppox0 38400
and it should work.
Adding the connect line is incompatible with the method used
to start ppppoed by simply invoking pppoed.
To work around it, a cleaner way is to create a new options file
/etc/ppp/options1 and then invoke pppd in the following way:

/usr/sbin/pppd file /etc/ppp/options1 /dev/pppox0 38400

alternatively if you have the options in /etc/ppp/options1 you
can start pppoed from pppd by using the script pppoedfromppp
found in the contrib directory. Make sure it is executable.

Demand Dialling
---------------

This is a feature already found in pppd.

add the following to your ppp options file (without the delimiting "--"):
Change the idle time to reflect what is good for you

--
demand
idle 60
--

This means that if the link is idle for 60 seconds, it will be terminated.
When you start sending packets again -- for example you click on
a web page or a masquareded box user clicks on a web page, pppoed will be
initiated again. Note that each time pppoed is initiated you will probably
end up getting a ddifferent IP address. This should not affect you unless
you are giving your IP address to people to access your machine from
the internet.
You should probably also turn off the lcp echoes to use this option;
otherwise the link would never be idle ;->
(there are more advanced ways to ignore the lcp echoes, but i wont discuss
them)
