socklib++ - a cross-platform library for socket handling
========================================================

        First, let me say that this is not Yet Another C++ Socket Library. I
don't suffer from the "not-made-here" syndrome. I created this library because
I needed a socket library for many projects, and couldn't find one that meet my
needs.
        I investigated some available C++ libraries, and most of them just offer
wrapper classes with ugly names and/or ugly methods. Some did even try to copy
Java's classes.
        The best one seemed the classic socket++. Unfortunately I couldn't make
it work on my Win98 box. After reading the documentation and the code for a bit,
I realized that it was too streambuf-centric. Also, it is a good example of code
that is written but never used - it has a smtp class that does almost nothing.
        I needed a (possibly stand-alone) library that could easily integrate
in my applications; most of the networking libraries were part of big
frameworks, so it wasn't always pleasant (or even easy) to use them with every
project.

        That's why I started this library:
                * it's small - you get a minimum overhead
                * independent (well, it depends on a BSD-sockets compatible
                  implementation)
                * it's cross-platform

Also, some good reasons for you to use this library:
        * it's being used; yeah, it's not just a stand alone library, it's
          really being used in my projects; so every code it contains is being
          used somewhere.
        * if you didn't like some design decisions, and have suggestions, please
          tell me; I would really like to improve it.
        * if you *need* some stuffs that aren't present in this library, but it
          would make sense to include them in here, tell me; I don't mind adding
          code that I won't use if at least someone is using and giving
          feedback.
