		      INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

For a basic installation, you must first run configure. For example,
if you want to install ArX in /home/frodo/ArX, type

  % ./configure --prefix=/home/frodo/ArX

If you do not specify a --prefix argument then the executables will be
placed in /usr/local. Be careful! The current installation script
unconditionally deletes some installation subdirectories.

Configure will attempt to guess various parameters about your system.
If you see something that it does wrong, you can override it's choices
by specifiying it on the command line. For example, if you want to
use a different C++ compiler, you can run configure as

  % ./configure CXX=myCXX --prefix=/home/frodo/ArX

A list of most of the things that you might need to specify are

  CC The C compiler
CXX The C++ compiler and linker for both C and C++ programs
CFLAGS Additional flags for the C compiler
CXXFLAGS Additional flags for the C++ compiler
LN_S How symbolic links are made (usually ln -s)
RANLIB How library archives are indexed.
  AWK
ARXSHELL The name of the shell and awk programs to use for the
ArX commands. They must be posix compatible.
  ARXTAR
  ARXDIFF
ARXPATCH The names of the tar, diff and patch programs. They
                must be the GNU versions.

Once everything has been configured, you can build, test, and install
ArX by running the included scripts.

  % ./build_arx
  % ./test_arx
  % ./install_arx

The tests are optional. They are also not complete. To run the
tests, on some systems, you must "unlimit datasize". Once you have
ArX installed, there are some additional tests in the tests/ directory.

If this doesn't work for you, or you would like to modify ArX, please
read DEVELOPERS.
