		      INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

These are generic installation instructions. For additional advice
for a particular architecture, see the "README.*" files. For making
RPM's, see INSTALL.RPM.

In the directory `src' (a subdirectory of this directory) use the
following commands (or similar) to build, test, and install this
software:

	% mkdir =build			# [0]
	% cd =build
	% ../configure --prefix INSTALL-DIRECTORY # [1] [2] [3]
	...
	% make				# [4] [5]
	...
	% make test			# [6]
	...
	% make install

There are additional tools in the tools/ directory. They are packaged
together as a convenience.

NOTES:

[0] You must use a build directory which is separate from the
    source tree.

[1] If /bin/sh on your system is not Posixly enough to handle
    the configure script, but "$SHELL" is, then run
    configure this way:

	"$SHELL" ../configure --prefix PREFIX --config-shell "$SHELL"

[2] Run "../configure --help" for information about setting
    parameters other than "--prefix".

[3] If you are using a locale other than POSIX C, the build may have
    problems. As a workaround, invoke make with

    LC_ALL=C LANG=C make

[4] You must use a recent version of GNU make. For now, do not
    use the "-j" option to make or otherwise arrange for a
    parallel make.

[5] You may have to specify a C++ compiler. Configure doesn't
    try to figure it out right now. You can do this by specifying the
    CXX variable on the make line. For example

       make CXX=g++-3.2

    You can also specify C++ flags with the CXXFLAGS variable, and C
    flags with CFLAGS.

[6] To run the tests, on some systems, you must "unlimit datasize".
