Installing the mod_macro 1.1.2 module with apache 1.3.22 is simple.
One just need to copy the mod_macro.c file into the apache source tree,
and to add the optionnal module when configuring apache.

Here is a sample installation with apache 1.3.22 and mod_macro 1.1.2:

(0) get the lastest mod_macro release:

    http://www.coelho.net/mod_macro/mod_macro/mod_macro-latest.tar.gz

(1) uncompress the distribution tar file if necessary.

    prompt> gunzip mod_macro-latest.tar.gz

(2) untar the distribution tar file along the apache source tree.

    prompt> tar xf mod_macro-latest.tar

(3) copy the module source into the apache source tree.

    prompt> cp mod_macro-1.1.2/mod_macro.c \
               apache_1.3.22/src/modules/extra/

(4) you may also want to install the html documentation.

    prompt> cp mod_macro-1.1.2/mod_macro.html \
               apache_1.3.22/htdocs/manual/mod/

    and maybe update apache_1.3.22/htdocs/manual/mod/index.html to
add a reference to the mod_macro.html file.

(5) go to the apache distribution tree.

    prompt> cd apache_1.3.22

(6) for better error messages with apache 1.3.3 a very small tiny little
patch is useful. Do not apply to apache 1.3.4 or later.

    prompt> patch -p1 < ../mod_macro-1.1.2/patch_to_apache_1.3.3

(7) build apache with the "--activate-module=src/modules/extra/mod_macro.c"
option. You can also add other options.

    prompt> ./configure --activate-module=src/modules/extra/mod_macro.c
    prompt> make
    prompt> make install

(8) enjoy;-)

(9) lobbying

If you really enjoy the module and think that it should be included
in the core apache distribution, instead of having it as a separate
module, you may consider telling so to the new-httpd at apache dot org
mailing list, with a short, gentle and motivated mail.

If enough people show interest in the module it might be included.
