Installation
============

Preface:
I know that freelords has quite a lot of dependencies and may be hard to
compile or install. If you face problems, feel free to contact the admins,
namely Michael and me (Ulf). Even if you are a beginner and feel that your
questions may be stupid, they are also helpful for us. Be assured that we
    aren't flooded with feedback. :)

Linux
-----

	1. Look at DEPENDENCIES to see if you have all libs needed for
freelords. If you have not compiled the libs yourself be sure to install
the devel packages as well. Note: You most certainly also need a gcc-3
since some parts of the code use extensions which the gcc-2.95 AFAIK
    doesn't accept.

	2. typical:
        ./configure
	    make
        make install

	4. If you want to customize the behaviour of freelords, write a
.freelordsrc now (see the sample configuration file in
the doc section) and copy it to /etc/freelordsrc (system-wide
       configuration) or $(HOME)/.freelordsrc (user-specific configuration).
This step will hopefully vanish soon, but until then you should
write a data path entry there.

E1. If you get an error with paragui, but know you have installed it and
can call "paragui-config", then run configure with --disable-paraguitest

E2. If you use gcc3.0, you may get errors about "changing search order..."
Ignore this one, it is not critical at all, but a nasty feature of the
	early gcc3 series

E3. If you have installed libsigc++, but freelords doesn't find it, this is
caused by the fact that freelords uses pkg-config to get the compilation
flags to include libsigc++. I suppose that the config file is distributed
with the package if you install a rpm or deb package. If not, correct me
    with a mail.
If you compiled libsigc++ yourself, it may be (at least that was when I
installed it last) that the package description file hasn't been copied with
'make install'. In this case, you have to copy the file sigc++-*.pc to the
config dir of pkg-config. On my system (Debian), it is /usr/lib/pkgconfig.
You may find it by calling "locate *.pc".

Other Unixes
------------

Installation here should work in the same manner as it works on linux (GNU tools
should be installed, of course).

We have been reported problems under BeOS with the native STL installation
there. If you get error reportings in files like /usr/include/.../map
or vector, string etc. try to install STLPort, to be found somewhere in the net
or contact the admins for further help.

If you have problems or successes with other unixes, we would like to hear of
them.

Win32
-----

    1. Download the latest Win32 version of FreeLords from sourceforge.net.

    2. OPTIONAL: configure FreeLords with the file freelordsrc

    3. Start FreeLords by executing freelords.exe
