Summary: tclkeymon-0.51

This is a major release update. Changes:

1. When running on battery or with lid closed, automatically
adjust power savings by spinning down the hard drive quickly,
reducing LCD brightness (turning it off if the lid is closed),
raising the fan fan thresholds (to keep the fan off longer),
keeping the CPU at low speed (requires cpuspeed daemon).

2. Since power control is now automatic, remove the Fn-F2 power
   control.

3. The microphone can be quicky muted/unmuted with Fn-spacebar.
This is handy for VoIP applications.

4. The configuration file now has definitions for the wired and
wireless Ethernet devices. This allows proper operation when
switching between wired/wireless. The defaults are "eth0" for
wired Ethernet and "eth1" for wireless.

Summary: tclkeymon-0.50

This is a major release update. Changes:

1. If using the experimental Toshiba ACPI driver from here:

   http://memebeam.org/toys/ExperimentalToshibaAcpiDriver

You can use the tbacklight utility to allow powering off
the display LCD. The tbacklight utility can be as part of the
toshutils package available for many distributions, or from:

   http://www.buzzard.org.uk/toshiba/

To specify that you want to use the tbacklight utility, add the
following to the configuration file (for example):

   set tbacklight "/usr/local/bin/tbacklight"

2. You can disable the polling loop entirely by specifying a polling
interval of zero in the configuration file:

   set pollInterval 0

When this is done, only screensaver related activities are enabled.

3. Allow disabling the setting of DMA on the CD/DVD (Fn-d) with:

   set cd_dvd "/dev/null"

4. The Toshiba "world" button next to the power button now runs
   Firefix instead of Mozilla

5. The fan is now automatically controlled (Fn-F2 is effectively disabled).
The temperature thresholds can be set with:

   set tempHigh 50
   set tempLow 45
   set tempOff 40

The tempOff value is only used when the screensaver kicks in, or Fn-b
is used to force an immediate screen blanking.

6. When the screensavers activates (or Fn-b is used), the hard drive will
be automatically idled. If on the AC adapter, the idle time is 2 minutes.
If running on batteries, the idle time is 5 seconds.

7. If the screen saver is not running when the Fn-b key combination is used
for an immediate screen blanking, the xscreensaver and dpms will be
restarted. This is handy if you've disabled the screen saver manually
to watch a movie, for example.

Summary: tclkeymon-0.42

This release has three updates in response to problems reported by
users:

1. The brightness is now being set in the polling loop, for machines
that revert to their "normal" brightness after a few seconds (as the
fan does, when set to high). This will insure that the LCD brightness
(fn-F6, fn-F7) renains as the user set it.

2. Different distributions place the xscreensaver-command in different
locations. The script will now check in these three directories for
the command:

   /usr/bin/X11
   /usr/bin
   /usr/X11R6/bin

If your distribution places the command elsewhere, please let me know.

3. The Mute/Unmute toggle (fn-Esc) didn't work on machines with
multichannel audio. This is now corrected.

Summary: tclkeymon-0.41

Minor update to correct a bug in the CD player functions. See the news
for tclkeymon-0.40 for the significant changes.

Changes since the last release:
# 0.41 Correct handling of initial CD player state

Summary: tclkeymon-0.40

Some pretty significant changes in this release.

Based on feedback, I invoke wish and load expect dynamically, instead of
running expectk. The reason for this is that some distributions don't provide
a binary for expectk, but do provide both expect and tk (SuSE, Debian?).

I no longer start and stop the pcmcia service when switching between the
Ethernet (eth0) and wireless (wlan0). Instead, I ifup/ifdown the interfaces
as appropriate. This is faster (preventing connection drops), and allows
monitoring the signal strength of the wireless even when it's not active.
That way, you will know that you have a good signal before switching to the
wireless connection, instead of switching, losing connections, and having to
switch back.

For machines with a combo CD/DVD, I added the Fn-d key combination to toggle
DMA on the device. DMA should be on when using the device for DVD playback,
but off when using it for CD playback or CD burning. A pop-up for the switch
confirms that you are in the proper state for the intended use.

A small bug-fix: the key/button press polling routine was clearing the button
queue on every poll, even if no key/button had been pressed. An unnecessary
write to the /proc file system.

I added initial support for a configuration file (/etc/tclkeymon.conf). This
allows some variables to be configured without having to modify the tclkeymon
source with each update. As time permits, I will migrate additional
configuration settings to this file.

I now use aumix when muting/unmuting the audio (Fn-Esc), and I save the
previous volume setting between operations.

Changes since the last release:
# 0.40 Use aumix and save mixer setting when muting/unmuting
# 0.39 Configuration file (/etc/tclkeymon.conf) support
# 0.38 Only clear the key queue if there was a key queued. Duh.
# 0.37 Add Fn-d key combination to enable/disable DMA on CD/DVD combo
# 0.36 Use ifup/ifdown on wlan0 instead of PCMCIA start/stop
# and remove delay
# 0.35 Change to use wish and 'package load Expect' to workaround
# the lack of an expectk in SUSE

Summary: tclkeymon-0.34

In this release, I've added little pop-up windows, to verify some of the
non-obvious changes (brightness, fan, network). The pop-up window stays
until you release the Fn key, so you can read it. This change requires
expectk, which is included with most distributions (but may not be installed
by default).

For example, on Fedora Core 1 (the release I use), the release is:

$ rpm -q expectk
expectk-5.39.0-93

I also backed out two changes, that set the CPU performance level and LCD
brightness with the fan. The video drivers were not at all happy. It seemed
OK, until I tried using something that used the accelerator (like glxgears);
the windows would appear but remained blank. I don't know the source of that
problem, so for now, those changes have been removed.

Changes since the last release:
# 0.34 Undo 0.27/0.32 changes; nVidia driver unhappy with that change
# 0.33 Add GUI pop-ups for operations, add expectk to requisites
# 0.32 Set minimal LCD brightness when fan off/low, CPU performance low
# 0.31 Add low CPU performance/low fan speed to cycle list

Summary: Initial Release

I've uploaded the initial (0.22) release of tclkeymon, to obtain feedback
from interested parties. As this is my first open source release, I'm learning
the processes as I go. Be gentle. :-)
