Here are some performance (et al) notes from users so far:

IMAP-server
===========
Hardware:
        Sun Fire 280, 2 x 750 MHz UltraSparc III, 4 GB RAM
        2 x 36 GB mirrored system disk
        1 X 490 GB external RAID 5
        1 x 100 MBit fullduplex NIC

Software:
        Solaris 8
        cyrus-imapd 2.0.16
        sendmail 8.12.6 + amavisd-new with milter

Webmail-server
==============
Hardware:
        Sun Fire 280, 2 x 900 MHz UltraSparc III, 4 GB RAM
        2 x 70 GB mirrored system disk
        1 x 100 MBit fullduplex NIC

Software:
        Solaris 8
        apache-1.3.27
        mod_ssl-2.8.11-1.3.27
        c-client from imap2002.RC6
        PHP-4.2.3
        php_accelerator-1.3.3r1
        mysql-max-3.23.52 with innodb
        imapproxy cvs (10/23/02) (plaintext auth only)
        Horde cvs HEAD
        IMP cvs HEAD

performance: IMP works up to 2 times slower, when it uses the imapproxy.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Everything is on one machine.

Hardware is Dell PowerEdge 2400, 2x600 Mhz PIII (Coppermine), 512MB memory,
RAID 5 on Dell PERC (OEM MegaRAID) controller, 100Bbit Full-Duplex Ethernet.

Software is RedHat Linux 6.1 (very heavily patched via RPMS, Redhat+Arvin).
apache-1.3.26-3.arvin.rh6.2, mod_ssl-2.8.10-2.arvin.rh6.2,
php-4.2.2-4p1.arvin.rh6.1, imap-2001a-1.62.0, postgresql-7.2.1-3.arvin.rh6.2,
imapproxy cvs (circa Sept. 2002), Horde et all from CVS HEAD.

Performance: About the same. No real data, but it *seems* just a tad bit
faster under load. Reduction in log file entries is very nice (fewer imap
login records in the log file due to the proxy).

============================================================================

This is a simple expect script to test performance differences:

#!/usr/local/bin/expect -f
set timeout 30

# no proxy
#spawn telnet sbox.tugraz.at 143

# proxy
spawn telnet localhost 1430

# no proxy
#        "* OK sbox.tugraz.at Cyrus IMAP4 v2.0.16 server ready" {

# proxy
#        "* OK IMAP4rev1 ImapProxy v1.0-1 Welcome to my dominion." {

expect {
        "* OK IMAP4rev1 ImapProxy v1.0-1 Welcome to my dominion." {
            send "0 login user pass\r";
            exp_continue
            }
        "0 OK" {
            send "1 LIST * *\r";
            exp_continue
            }
        "1 OK" {
            send "2 SELECT INBOX\r";
            exp_continue
            }
        "Completed" {
            send "3 logout\r";
            exp_continue
            }
        "3 OK"
            {
            exit 0;
            }
}
exit 0;
