Building Java-Gnome - Quick Notes
---------------------------------

You must have the JDK for Linux <http://www.blackdown.org> and GTK 1.2.
Make sure that javadoc, javac, java etc. is in your PATH.

Warning: JNI calls are not compatible with Metrowerks JIT compiler on
JDK PowerPC 1.1. Be sure to unset the JAVA_COMPILER variable.

Everything is in src directory. A few samples is in also included in the test
directory.

Java-Gnome has been tested on Linux i386 and PowerPC, with Sun/Blackdown javac
and IBM jikes compilers.

To compile and build Java-Gnome do the following:
- run configure
- do a make or make all

If you want to install Java-Gnome do this instead:
- run configure --libdir=<install dir>
  eg. configure --libdir=/usr/lib
- do a make or make all
- do a make install (to uninstall do a make uninstall)

If you want to save space after you build it do a make clean to remove all the
java, class and C files that can be regenerated.

Please E-mail us about any problems building Java-Gnome.

You should finish with a gtk.jar file and a libGTKJava.so native lib. A few
test files are included, MicroTest.java, BigTest.java and TestGTK.java. Be
sure to have gtk.jar in your CLASSPATH and libGTKJava.so in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH
if you did not install it in a place like /usr/lib. There is a test_env_csh and
test_env_sh file in the test directory.

The Building Process
--------------------

For people that wants more detail about the building process, building Java-gnome is a three steps process:
- Compiling the .defs converter. It is a tool written in java.
- Generating the java wrappers (in the gtk directory) and C glue code
  (glue directory)
- Compiling the wrappers and building a shared lib

Naming Scheme
-------------

In this version, naming changed to something closer to classic GTK:
gtk_window_set_title is now translated to gtk.GtkWindow.setTitle(...).
A sort of compromise between the previous "all-java" naming
gtk.Window.setTitle(..) scheme and use of C names which would give us a
gtk.GtkWindow.set_title(...)

Feel free to experiment with other GTK classes. The included examples were my
only tests.

Have fun,

Ol.
