PLUGIN INSTALLATION
===================

The first thing you need to do, obviously, is have talkfilters
installed on the system. Make sure that the `LD_LIBRARY_PATH'
environment variable contains the path to the talkfilters libraries
(typically `/usr/local/lib', unless you specified a different
installation prefix).

Next, download and extract the latest GAIM source distribution. You
need to do this even if you already have installed GAIM. I haven't
tested the plugin with versions of GAIM prior to 0.74, and I don't
plan to, so if you have an older version of GAIM installed, consider
upgrading. The most recent version of GAIM that I have successfully
built and used this plugin with is 0.79. Since I had to update the API
version number to 4, the plugin may no longer work with versions of
GAIM prior to 0.79.

Run `./configure' in the toplevel GAIM source tree to
create the Makefiles.

Copy the file `talkfilters.c' from the directory containing this
README file into the `plugins' directory in the GAIM source tree. Then
cd to that directory. Set the `PLUGIN_LIBS' environment variable to
`-L<prefix>/lib -ltalkfilters', and the 'PLUGIN_CFLAGS' environment
variable to '-I<prefix>/include', where <prefix> is the install prefix
of your talkfilters installation (typically '/usr/local') and then
build the plugin by typing: `make talkfilters.so'.

Copy the resulting `talkfilters.so' file to <prefix>/lib/gaim, where
<prefix> is the install prefix of your GAIM installation (typically
`/usr/local', unless you configured it otherwise).

Finally, restart GAIM. Open the GAIM Preferences dialog and click on
the "Plugins" item. Enable the "GNU Talk Filters" plugin, which will
create a new item under "Plugins". Click on that item and activate the
filter of your choice.
