        Nagios Watch 0.1 - Gtk-Perl frontend for Nagios

  1) Description

     Nagios Watch is a Gtk-Perl frontend, that reads the status.log file which
     is created by Nagios ( http://www.nagios.org ).

  3) Uncompressing

     Already done if you are reading this.

  4) Installing netstatus

     Nagios Watch uses the status.log file which is created by Nagios. This
     status.log file therefor is located on the machine where Nagios is
     actualy running. For this reason we have to make the information within
     this file available over the network.

     In the following example I make use of inetd and tcpwrappers.

     o Login to the machine which you are running Nagios on.

     o Become root.

     o Add the following entry to /etc/services:
       nagstatus 33333/tcp      #nagios

     o Add the following entry to /etc/inetd.conf:
       nagstatus stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd \
       /usr/local/bin/nagios-status

     o Add the following entry to /etc/hosts.allow
       nagios-status: 127.0.0.1

     o Change the 127.0.0.1 ipnumber to the ipnumber of the host you are
       going to run Nagios Watch on.

     o In /usr/local/bin create a file called nagios-status which contains
       the following lines:
       #!/bin/sh
       /bin/cat /usr/local/nagios/var/status.log

     o Make the newly created file executable:
       chmod +x /usr/local/bin/nagios-status

     o Restart the inetd by sending a kill -HUP

     Now everything that needed to be done on the Nagios host should be done.
     To test if everything went allright, do the following:

     o Login to the machine which you are wanting to run netstatus on.

     o Telnet to the Nagios machine on port 33333.
       $telnet somehost.domain.org 33333

     If setup allright, you should end up with a lot of data on your screen.

     Edit nagwatch to match your setup. The following variables you might
     want to change:

       $server = "your.nagios-server.net";
       $browser = "location/of/your/browser";
       $url = "http://www.your.nagios-server.net/nagios/";
       $pixmapdir "location/of/pixmap/images";

     Finaly, copy the *.xpm images to the location set in $pixmapdir.

  5) Using

     Simply type nagwatch to run the program.
