mplayer 0.90rc1+ compiled with jpeg support
ImageMagick 5
perl 5+
gtk+ 2.x
libjpeg62
gdk-pixbuf-loaders

sox (recommended)
transcode (recommended)
mencoder (recommended)
libmjpeg-tools (recommended)

xmms (optional)
cdda2wav (optional)

Installation (DEV versions, pre versions):
------------------------------
see 'Installing from source' or 'Installing from binaries', below.

Installation (RPM)
_________________

If necessary, change user to root. Type:

           su -

and enter the root password.

Then:
          rpm -Uvh LiVES-0.8.5-1.i586.rpm

If you see the message:

"error: failed dependencies:
        mplayer >= 0.90rc1 is needed by LiVES-0.8.5-1"

and you have mplayer installed and you built it from source, you can safely ignore this. This dependancy is just there as a reminder.

If there are no other failed dependencies, it is safe to do:
           rpm -Uvh LiVES-0.8.5-1.i586.rpm --nodeps

Installation (Binary version)
----------------------------
First of all, unpack the distribution, with:

        bzip2 -d LiVES-0.9.1-pre6-bin.tar.bz2
or,
        gzip -d LiVES-0.9.1-pre6-bin.tar.gz

depending on which version you have. Then:

        tar xvf LiVES-0.9.1-pre6-bin.tar

then:

        cd LiVES-0.9.1-pre6

Next, make sure that smogrify and lives are in your path, e.g:
(as root if necessary):

       cp smogrify /usr/bin
       chmod a+x /usr/bin/smogrify
       cp LiVES-0.9.1-pre6/lives-exe /usr/bin
       chmod a+x /usr/bin/lives-exe
       ln -s /usr/bin/lives-exe /usr/bin/lives

*NOW INSTALL THE THEMES AND PLUGINS AS DESCRIBED BELOW*

After installing themes and plugins, run LiVES with:

       lives

or:

       lives-exe

Installing from source (Dev/pre version)
----------------------
At a terminal prompt, enter the following:

          bzip2 -d LiVES-0.9.1-pre6-src.tar.bz2
or,
          gzip -d LiVES-0.9.1-pre6-src.tar.gz

depending on which version you have. Then:

          tar xvf LiVES-0.9.1-pre6-src.tar

          cd LiVES-0.9.1-pre6

          ./configure && make install

*NOW INSTALL THE THEMES AND PLUGINS AS DESCRIBED BELOW*

Themes and Plugins
------------------
Whether installing from source or binaries, you also need to update or create
the themes, icons and plugins directories for LiVES.

Note: you may need to do this as root.

First you need to install the plugins (assuming default locations):
      mkdir /usr/share/lives/
      cp lives-0.9.1-pre6.plugins.tar.gz /usr/share/lives/
      cd /usr/share/lives/
      rm -r plugins
      tar -zxvf lives.plugins.tar.gz
      chmod -R a+rx plugins

Themes and icons are installed in a similar way:
      cp lives-0.9.1-pre6.themes-icons.tar.gz /usr/share/lives/
      cd /usr/share/lives/
      rm -r themes
      rm -r icons
      tar -zxvf lives-0.9.1-pre6.themes-icons.tar.gz
      chmod -R a+r themes
      chmod -R a+r icons

You can change the '/usr' part of this path to something else, e.g. '/opt'
To do this you need to run LiVES once to create your config file in ~/.lives
Then you need to edit the ~/.lives file and change <prefix_dir> to point to the
alternate location. See the Note marked IMPORTANT above for more details.

Once themes and plugins are installed, start the program with:

        lives
or:
        lives-exe

RFX System
----------
If you want to use the (new) RFX system for making effect and tool plugins for
LiVES, you should install the RFX builder programs:

First, find the build-lives-rfx-plugin files which are distributed with LiVES
0.9.1-pre5+

then, (as root):

cp build-lives-rfx-plugin* /usr/bin/
chmod a+x /usr/bin/build-lives-rfx-plugin*

Relocating:
-----------

The default location for plugins, themes and icons is /usr.

When installing from source, you can change this with:
        ./configure --prefix=/some/other/dir

Changing the plugin/themes/icon directories
-------------------------------------------
If you want to change the plugin/themes/icon directories to something other than
/usr/share/lives/

you must run the new version of LiVES once to
create/update your ~/.lives file, then you must edit that file and change
the value of:

	<prefix_dir>
	/usr
	</prefix_dir>

to point to the correct plugins/icons/themes directory -

 - '/share/lives' is always added after this prefix to give the full path.
eg if in ~/.lives you put:
	<prefix_dir>
	/opt/lives
	</prefix_dir>
then your plugins should end up in /opt/lives/share/lives/plugins/*

In future this will be done from the GUI front end.

Troubleshooting
---------------
Make sure you have themes and icons, and plugins installed as above.
If you changed the default location, make sure you edit <prefix_dir>
in ~/.lives

In case of any problems, check your ~/.lives file and make sure everything is
pointing to the right locations.

Make sure there is plenty of space available in the temporary directory
(default is /tmp/livestmp).
It is advisable to change the temp directory from Tools|Preferences|Directory.

Make sure you have a working copy of mplayer installed, and that it is
compiled with jpeg support.

If you have problems opening a particular video file, try to preview
it first
in the 'open file' dialogue. If you cannot preview it, it means mplayer is not
compiled to open it. You may need to recompile mplayer for your system
with extra libraries.

If you are having problems encoding, make sure you have everything you need
installed. The plugins are just interfaces, and you need to have the binaries
installed also.

Finally, if you are still having problems, join the lives-video
mailing list and you can ask your question there !

IMPORTANT !
-----------
When started from a desktop icon, or from a menu, LiVES can sometimes cause
strange effects in X.

If this happens, LiVES should be started from a terminal, so if there is an
option to do this in the desktop icon, it should be selected. If there are
terminal options, you may enter '-geometry 0x0' to prevent the terminal from
actually appearing.
