    README for librsynth version 2.2.0

ABSTRACT
    librsynth is an adaptation of Nick Ing-Simmons' "rsynth" package for
    Klatt-style speech synthesis.

REQUIREMENTS
    * Linux
        Nick's original "say" program ran on a number of other platforms,
        but since I have no access to these platforms, "librsynth" currently
        runs only under linux. Porting to other OSs/architectures shouldn't
        be too hairy, though.

    * GNU GDBM
        For dictionaries.

INSTALLATION
    The package now uses GNU autoconf-2.5 to build a configure script. The
    generic install instructions are in INSTALL, but basically it works like
    this :

     configure
     make
     make check
     say --help
     say Something of your choice
     make -n install # see what it is going to do
     make install     # copy program(s) to /usr/local/bin

DIRECTORY STRUCTURE
    In addition to some more substantial changes, I have changed the
    directory structure of Nick's original "rsynth" package. The new
    subdirectories and their contents are as follows:

    * doc/
        Documentation from the original "rsynth" package.

    * include/
        Contains the header files for librsynth. These get installed in
        ${PREFIX}/include.

    * src/
        Contains the rest of the C source code.

    * dict/
        Dictionaries get built here.

    * lib/
        Libraries get put here when built.

BUGS AND LIMITATIONS
    * Lost support for all of rsynth's supported platforms except for
        linux.

    * GNU make is probably required now.

    * Still some globals left floating around that probably shouldn't be
        there.

    * Redundantly keeping both filenames and descriptors in the rsynth
        struct is ugly.

    *   Probably many more.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
    Nick Ing-Simmons wrote the original "rsynth" package. This library
    branches from "rsynth-2.0". See also Nick's original "README" file in
    the "doc/" subdirectory as "README.rsynth".
