                             knsbookmark

        convert Netscape bookmark file in a kfm bookmark tree

This tool started as a quick hack to have my bookmarks collected with Netscape
also available with KFM. So it is just a commandline tool and probably will
stay one because there is little need for a gui.

If the structure of the Netscape bookmark file changes (tested with
Communicator 4.0, 4.51 and OS/2 Navigator 2.0) the search/replace behavior of
knsbookmark must be adapted accordingly.

By default knsbookmark is installed into the K-menu under Internet
to convert ~/.netscape/bookmarks.html to ~/.kde/share/apps/kfm/bookmarks.

To install, proceed as usual:

 configure
 su
 make install
 make distclean

Also see in the contrib directory to find more useful things contributed
by others.

Upgrade
=======

If you upgraded from 0.2.x or below, keep in mind that there still exists
the obsolete /usr/local/lib/libexpat.so.

Mozilla milestone M1 came with its own libexpat.so. If you are sure, you
dont`t need libexpat.so any more, remove it or at least move it to a safe
place.

Conversion problems
===================

If you have any problems with converting and can't find the place, use
the option -w to dump the intermediate xml file and have a look at the stuff
fed to the parser. knsbookmark reports the exact line number and column when
it finds an error.

Especially avoid fragments like <some-string> (the angle brackets!) in your
bookmark properties as they represent html/xml tags.

Usually you only have the following html tags in your bookmark file, every
other may cause a problem:

 <TITLE> <H1> <DL> <P> <DT> <H3> <DD> <BR> <A>

You also should avoid the slash character in your bookmark properties,
as it is reserved to separate directory names. It will be replaced by "%2F".

I also noticed, that the *original* netscape bookmark file is not well formed
in terms of xml (one superflouos </DL>). After moving one entry and saving,
everything was ok.

The end
=======

After converting you have to logout/login to make kfm show the new
bookmarks. A "Restart" from the K-menu is not enough (tested with KDE1.0pre).

Happy browsing,
