+---------------------+
| mtv fullscreen mode |
+---------------------+

Fullscreen mode is available with mtv-1.0.8.0+ (Linux).

You must install the mtv-fullscreen-extension package
when available. If you installed mtv from a TGZ archive,
if voh_sdl.so is provided, you must copy this file in
the directory /usr/local/lib/mtvp/voh/

To enter fullscreen mode: use the menu Window->Fullscreen
or click on the video using the right button.
If it does not work, please read further!

To exit fullscreen mode and return to normal display mode: press
any key or click the mouse.

FEEDBACK APPRECIATED
====================

If the new fullscreen mode works for you, please send us some
feedback at support@mpegtv.com.

The fullscreen mode has not been tested on linux-alpha, but it
should work if your XFree86 server supports DGA.
Please tell us if it work on your linux-alpha system.

Requirements for using the fullscreen mode
-------------------------------------------

The fullscreen mode use Sam Lantinga's Simple DirectMedia Layer
library (SDL). For more on SDL go to
"http://www.devolution.com/~slouken/SDL/".

On some systems SDL relies on XFree86's DGA extension, therefore
fullscreen will only work with XFree86, not with other X servers
like XiG's Accelerated-X.

You need SDL. As of mtv-1.1.4, the SDL version recommanded are:
If you have a libc5 or glibc 2.0 linux distribution: you need
SDL-0.9.9.

The SDL library libSDLx11.so.0.9 must be installed in
/usr/X11R6/lib/ (path is hard-coded for security reasons).

If you have a glibc 2.1 linux distribution: you need
SDL-1.1.2.

To find out up-to-date information about what version of SDL
you need, look at the mtv-fullscreen-extension package
information using the rpm command, for example:

$ rpm -q -p mtv-fullscreen-extension-1.1.4-1.i386.rpm

**** SECURITY WARNING!!! ****

Using the fullscreen mode that may (*) requires that
mtvp be set-uid root (see README-Fullscreen).
Setting the 's' bit of mtvp (set-uid root) creates security holes
and allows a user to perform privileged operations. Therefore if
you have a system that must be secure, you should not set the 's'
(set-uid) flag of mtvp. To remove the 's' flag (set-iud) of mtvp:
$ chmod -s mtvp

(*) If you have installed mtv-1.1.0.20+ on a glibc 2.1 system,
and have installed SDL 1.0.4+, you can use the fullscreen mode
without being root and mtvp does not need to be set-uid root.

**** END SECURITY WARNING ****

An alternative solution to set-uid root is to use the "sudo"
command: http://www.courtesan.com/sudo/. Sudo (superuser do)
allows a system administrator to give certain users (or groups of
users) the ability to run some (or all) commands as root or
another user while logging the commands and arguments.

Fullscreen only works on a local display. Because of a
limitation in the DGA of XFree86 3.2, it won't work with DISPLAY
set to "localhost:0.0", even though this is the local display.
Environment variable DISPLAY should be set to ":0.0".
To check: $ printenv DISPLAY

XFree86 must run in 16, 24 or 32-bit depth.

Fullscreen will always use the current depth of your X server.
Use 24 or 32-bit depth for optimum color quality.

The Color mode of mtv (Menu Option->Video) should be set to
Full-color.

The fullscreen mode will use the closest XFree86 mode that matches
or is larger than the size of the video.

Usually, it is a good idea to make sure that the following
resolutions are defined in your XFree86 configuration file
(XF86Config):

   Mode "320x240"
    DotClock 15.750
    HTimings 320 336 384 400
    VTimings 240 244 246 262
     Flags "Doublescan"
   EndMode

   Mode "352x240"
    DotClock 15.750
    HTimings 352 368 416 432
    VTimings 240 244 246 262
     Flags "Doublescan"
   EndMode

   Mode "352x280"
    DotClock 15.750
    HTimings 352 368 416 432
    VTimings 280 288 286 302
     Flags "Doublescan"
   EndMode

   Mode "352x288"
    DotClock 15.750
    HTimings 352 368 416 432
    VTimings 288 296 290 310
     Flags "Doublescan"
   EndMode

Don't forget to add all those modes in the Modes line for each
Display subsection of the Screen section.

Note: The timing indicated here may be inadequate for your graphic
board and/or monitor. Please refer to the XFree86 Howto, FAQ and
documentation for configuring XFree86 and setting video modes:

http://www.xfree86.org/
http://www.xfree86.org/FAQ/
http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.5/Config.html

It is good idea to use "xvidtune" to finetune the video modes
you are planning to use for the fullscreen video playback.

You may also use tools like the 'XFree Modeline Generator':

Current limitations & Known problems
------------------------------------

Fullscreen mode is currently not available in 8-bit depth
and does not work with Gray color mode.

XFree86 prints spurious messages:
video memory unprotecting
video memory protecting

The SDL library prints the following spurious message:
Warning: This set-uid program may be a security risk

Fullscreen mode may not look good if the video size is not
a multiple of 16.

Fullscreen mode will work better if there is enough on-board
memory installed on your graphic board to support hardware planes
and double-buffering. If double-buffering cannot be used the image
may appear teared (i.e. no sync on vertical retrace).

Due to a bug in XFree86's DGA extension, Fullscreen mode will not
work if you have a RIVA128 graphic chip or card.

A bug in SDL may cause mtvp to crash if fullscreen mode is set more
than once. If that happens, you should kill all the remaining mtvp
processes with "kill -9 <pid>".

A bug in some versions of mtvp may cause the video to flicker
terribly. If this happens, try to using the most version of
mtv. Another workaround is to set the environment variable
MTVP_SDL_NO_DOUBLEBUF. If this does not solve the problem, set
also the environment variable MTVP_SDL_NO_HWSURFACE.

Final notes
-----------

If you still have problems with fullscreen, please tell us at
support@mpegtv.com.

Use fullscreen mode at you own risks! On some systems, this mode
may cause your X server to die or hang, due to problems in the SDL
library or in XFree86 drivers. The fullscreen mode is quite new
and not fully tested yet.

Enjoy!
