Promise Technology Partial Source FastTrak RAID Driver.

Support for the following FastTrak controller versions:

FASTTRAK 66
FASTTRAK 100
FASTTRAK 100 Lite
FASTTRAK TX2
FASTTRAK TX2000

Note: Experienced administrators and users are probably the ones that want this more than beginning Linux users. Kernel upgrades are a definite reason for compiling a new driver. Be sure you know what you are doing BEFORE trying to upgade a kernel/driver combination. Please read the entire README before continuing.

Please do not modify, move, destroy, or be malicious to your engine.o under the promise_raid_engine directory. It has feelings and if it feels threatened in anyway, no RAID for you!

Prerequisites:

1. c compiler - gcc ( current version for all standard distributions of linux)

2. make - script for compiling source code

3. Linux source - Linux source code is required.

Compile directions:

1. gunzip fasttrak_partial_source.tar.gz

2. tar -xvf fasttrak_partial_source.tar

2. cd build21 (this is the default directory created from step 2)

3. make all

4. ft.o, the FastTrak driver should be present in build21 after 'make' has ran.

5. Confirm that you ft.o has no unresolved symbols by typing: insmod -p ft.o

6. If there are no messages about unresolved symbols, it is safe to run ft.o.

Linux Source directions:

1. Traditionally Linux source is located under /usr/src. If you decide to install Linux source in a different directory, you must change the Makefile to indicate you new source location. For example:

You decide to install linux source under your home directory, with the top-level directory name of 'linux' which is either a directory or symbolic link.

Change the Makefile line to the following:

INDEP386= -D__KERNEL__ -I- -I. -I./promise_raid_engine -I/home/joe_shmoe/linux -I/home/joe_shmoe/linux/include -I/home/joe_shmoe/linux/include/linux -I/home/joe_shmoe/linux/drivers/scsi  -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe -fno-strength-reduce -m386 -DCPU=386 -DMODULE -DMODVERSIONS -include /usr/src/linux/include/linux/modversions.h

It is possible to use relative paths, but to simplify things it's better to just enter the entire path.

2. If you require modversioning for Redhat support, make sure modversioning is enabled, and type 'make dep'. This will create the modversion header file.

3. If you require modversioning support use the following command: 'make modversionon'

3. If you DO NOT require modversioning support use the following command: 'make modversionoff'

General Notes:

1. If you would like to compile a driver against your current kernel version, type the following:
	uname -r

2. The output will give you the kernel version you are running. Look for the Linux source on your Linux distribution website and other websites on the Internet.

3. Install Linux source code. Traditionally Linux source is installed under /usr/src and generally all Linux source RPM packages are installed under /usr/src. Installing to this location minimizes the amount of pain you will experience when compiling the FastTrak driver.

4. Lastly, make sure that the top level source directory is called linux under /usr/src. It can either be the directory name or a symbolic link to the directory name.
