If you want to use gettext PHP support, php must be compiled with the --with-gettext flag see PHP documentation for how to do this.

You can test your installation using following peace of code :

// test if gettext extension is installed with php

if (!function_exists("gettext")) 
{
    echo "gettext is not installed\n";
} 
else 
{
    echo "gettext is supported\n";
}

If the gettext support is not installed, GetText package will still work but it may run slower.

The GetText package should be installed using 'pear' script using following command :

pear install GetText-X.X.X.tgz

Where X.X.X is the latest GetText package version.
