1. Obtaining SZIP

The latest supported public release of SZIP is available from
   ftp://hdf.ncsa.uiuc.edu/szip/2.0. Binary distribution (with encoder
enabled) can be found under ftp://hdf.ncsa.uiuc.edu/szip/2.0/bin
For general information about SZIP see
   http://hdf.ncsa.uiuc.edu/doc_resource/SZIP/.

2. License agreement

SZIP comes with a license. SZIP distributed with HDF products is free for
non-commercial use; commercial licenses are available for commercial users
who wish to distribute an Szip-based software product. For details check
   "License terms" section under http://hdf.ncsa.uiuc.edu/doc_resource/SZIP/
or COPYING file in the top-level directory of the SZIP source code
   distribution.

3. Installation on UNIX and Mac OSX

Obtain source tar ball from ftp://hdf.ncsa.uiuc.edu/szip/2.0/src

3.1 Installation with encoder (license may be required)

Untar the source into szip-2.0 directory
   % tar -xvf szip-2.0.tar

Change directory to the szip-2.0 directory; configure, build and
   test for your platform:

   % cd szip-2.0
   % ./configure --prefix=/where_to_install
   % make
   % make check
   % make install

Encoder is available by default. If "prefix" flag is not specified,
library will be installed under the szip-2.0/szip directory.

3.2 Installation without encoder (license not required)

Untar the source into the szip-2.0 directory
   % tar -xvf szip-2.0.tar

Change directory to the "szip" directory; configure and build for your
   platform:

   % cd szip-2.0
   % ./configure --disable-encoding --prefix=/where_to_install
   % make
% make check (you should get an error message when you try to test since
                 encoding is disabled)
   % make install

   3.3 Using non-default compiler

By default, platform configuration file under config directory is used
to set up compiler and compilation flags.

Use CC and CFLAGS environment variables if other compiler or additional
   flags are desired. For example:

   % setenv CC /my_compiler/bin/foo
   % setenv CFLAGS "-foo_flags"

Then follow instructions from 3.1 or 3.2 to configure and build the library.

4. Installation for Windows platforms

To install on Windows, extract project and instruction files from the
szipproj.zip archive in the "windows" directory, and follow instructions
   in the INSTALL_SZIP.txt file.

5. Supported OSs
