You can back up and recover SAP DB databases by using external backup tools.

This description of
how to use the external backup tools applies for the SAP DB versions specified
in the relevant sections. It does
not matter what kind of database instance (SAP DB OLTP, liveCache, SAP DB Document
Server, SAP DB OLAP, SAP DB
E-Catalog) you use. For more
information about which database instance types are supported by which
versions of SAP DB, see SAP DB Versions and
Database Instance Types.
There may be
differences between UNIX and Microsoft Windows-based operating system
platforms. For simplicity,
the abbreviations UNIX and Windows are used.
