Make sure you have:

A UNIX-like box, C++ compiler, POSIX thread library, OSS/Alsa/MME(Tru64) sound system API and optionally

 - mpg123 >= 0.60 for the mpeg audio input
 - libsndfile for the sndfile input (WAV, FLAC, ...)

I have:

	Linux-2.6
	Glibc with linuxthreads or NPTL
GCC-4 (3.3 and 3.4 work, 3.2 was broken ... seems to be OK now; don't try 2.x since I'm really doing C++ here)

	on AMD/Intel machines...

and still (occasionally) testing with:

	Compaq XP1000 Alpha ev67
	OSF1/Tru64 Unix V5.1B
	native Compaq compiler

IMPORTANT: GCC-3.3.3 breaks part of my code with -O3 (or -O2 -frename-registers)! This is a bug in gcc -- version 3.4 doesn't show this apparently.

On the mp3 decoder: The mp3 backend is what started the whole project and for it an appropriate decoder binary is needed.
DerMixD used a modified mpg123 control_generic interface as found in mpg123.0.59r-thor4 and upwards.
I recommend a mpg132 binary from the revived official mpg123 project, starting with 0.60, see http://mpg123.org .
The decoder binary must be either in the PATH that dermixd gets or the full binary path has to specified on the command line (or, in future, in a config file)

There are some default targets in the Makefile... just issue make and read the message.

For a standard GNU/Linux system:

`make gnu` for both ALSA and OSS support
`make gnu-oss` for OSS only
`make gnu-alsa` for ALSA only

and

`make tru64`

for my Tru64/MME attempt. If you have another platform, adjusting the Makefile shouldn't be that difficult... when I get bugged enough I may even start using automake/conf;-)

The Tru64/MME support is halfway there... I should have it basically working now; it lacks some testing and there is this habit of the program crashing when you remove a mme output device.
This should be fixed in principle, but since the MME audio system seems not to be designed for continuous audio playback - I get short annoying pauses in playback even with native audioplay app - I don't really feel that it's worth it.
I'd happily make the OSS output work for OSS on Tru64 if someone requests it, but since I don't have a soundchip supported by that, I'm propably going to install Linux on that Alpha box... that has a decent sound system.

NOTE: To build the sndfile input, specify SNDFILE=yes with the make command like

make SNDFILE=yes gnu

That enables compilation of the sndfile_input device and links with -lsndfile .
Of course this means you need libsndfile installed.

In the same way you can enable vorbisfile input via

make VORBISFILE=yes gnu

That needs libvorbis installed (which includes libvorbisfile).
Of course you can combine the two above choices;-)
