* INTRODUCTION

gtkDPS is the set of functions, objects, and widgets to use DPS easily
with GTK. This is a spinoff of the GYVE, GNU Yellow Vector Editor
project.

DisplayPostScript(DPS) provides rich 2D drawing functions.

   The DPS provides a device-independent imaging model for
   displaying information on a screen. The imaging model
   uses the PostScript language which has powerful graphics
   capabilities and frees the programmer from
   display-specific details like screen resolution and
   color issues. These server can interpret PS inputs from
   its client program.
   --- Quoted From ANNOUNCE file in DGS-0.5.8.

Some vendor's X server has the DPS extension developed by
Adobe. You can check the existence of the DPS extension by
xpyinfo command.

DGS is GNU implementation of DPS APIs. It is under
development. On GNU/Linux or other free OSs, You need DGS in
order to use gtkDPS. See below.

* Requirements

DPS server: Install DGS, Ghostscript based DPS server. DGS-0.5.8 is
obsolete to run gtkDPS. You have to get DGS-0.5.9.1 or the latest
version from GNUstep CVS repository.

DGS-0.5.9.1:
ftp://ftp.gnustep.org/pub/gnustep/dgs/dgs-0.5.9.1.tar.gz

About GNUstep CVS repository, see
http://www.gnustep.org/resources/Anoncvs.txt

You can also get the latest snapshot via ftp.
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/gnustep/snap/

If your OS's X server has DPS extension, you don't have to install
DGS.

DPS client library: The client library is in DGS. Therefore you
have to do nothing if you use DGS as DPS server. Many vendors'
OS that has DPS extension in X server also provides DPS client
library, too. Therefore you have to do nothing if your OS's X server
has DPS extension. However as far as I know IRIX doesn't provides
full set of DPS client library(I cannot find libdpstk.a). If the OS
you are using has not the DPS client library, get the DGS and
install the client library only.

GTK+:
Install Gtk+-1.2.x ( x >= 6 )

* Classes, widgets and samples in the distribution

gtkDPS consists of one abstract, one abstract class and
four concrete widgets.

`GtkDPSContext' is an abstract class. The instance of the class
wraps a DPSContext and one drawable.

`GtkDPSWidget' is an abstract widget. The widget wraps a DPSContext
and a widget.

`GtkDPSarea' is the most important concrete widget. The widget
wraps a DPSContext and some drawables. You can wrap any number
of drawables for any purpose. e.g. drawing optimization.

`GtkDPSFontSelection' is a concrete widget. You can select and
preview fonts installed to DPS server.

`GtkDPSPaintSelection' is a concrete widget. This widget displays
the `painting' catalogs and accepts user's selection. `Painting'
includes color, gradation, pattern and so on.

`GtkDPSLineSelection' is a concrete widget. You can select and
preview line style including dash pattern.

In this distribution, there is 6 sample programs that show
how the gtkDPS widgets work.

`sample' is The most simple sample that shows how `GtkDPSarea'
works.

`sample2' is like `sample' but it opens two windows. Each window
is bound to DPSContext. DGS didn't support multiple contexts till
version 0.5.8 and still context switching problems are in DGS-0.5.8.
`sample2' was written to check the context switching of DGS.

`dpsmark' is a simple DPS server benchmark program.

`fontsel' shows how the GtkDPSFontSelection widget works.

`paintsel' shows how the GtkDPSPaintSelection widget works.

`linesel' shows how the GtkDPSLineSelection widget works.

* Usage

This distribution doesn't contain manual. See the source codes of
6 sample programs described above.

* History

gtkDPS/sample2.c that is written by Hideki FUJIMOTO
(hideki70@osk2.3web.ne.jp) is useful to check that your DPS server
or nxagent supports mulit context.

Font selection widget that are renamed from Fontpanel widget written
by Hideki FUJIMOTO(hideki70@osk2.3web.ne.jp) is merged to gtkDPS
 0.2.10. `fontsel' tests Font selection widget.

The initial version of gtkDPS is derived from gtkGL by Shigeru
AOSASA(aozasa@sakuranet.or.jp).

GtkDPS-0.3.x is rewritten by Hideki FUJIMOTO<hideki70@osk2.3web.ne.jp>
and Masatake YAMATO<masata-y@is.aist-nara.ac.jp>.
Hideki FUJIMOTO worked on multiple drawable supporting in GtkDPSArea.
Masatake YAMATO worked on multiple context supporting.

* Hacking

If you are interested in hacking gtkDPS itself, see HACKING
and TODO in this distribution.
