This release should compile "out of the box" or with trivial changes
on any UNIX-like system that approximates POSIX, BSD, or System V.
Undel Linux-ELF, and SunOS-4 shared libraries are supported as
well. In order to build the shared library under other systems, you'll
need to contribute the code.

If this is not true on your system, it means we didn't fix enough
things in the Makefile. This file is already in the beta versions,
'cause I know we 'll forget to update it before releasing a 'true' dialog.

Anyways, Linux is supported for sure, because it is the platform we run
at home. SunOS-4 with ncurses is supported too.

   instructions
   ------------

Type "./configure" in this directory. This runs a configuration
script created by GNU autoconf, which configures dialog for your
system and creates a Makefile. The configure script allows you to
customize the Tcl configuration for your site. The following cmdline
options are available (there are zillions more standard autoconf
options, but they are not documented here).

  --help
Tells the zillion options available. The most important standard
one is "--prefix", explained below. The other options below are
	dialog-specific.

  --prefix=<prefix>
Specify a different installation path. By default dialog is
installed in /usr/local (bin, lib, lib/dialog, include).
Specifying a prefix will select a different installation tree.

  --enable-smallest
This option is designed to strip out of dialog any "bells and
whistles", to help fitting an installation disk. This disables
mouse reporting and reading the rc file.

  --enable-debug
	Compile with "-g -DDEBUG_DIALOG" instead of "-O".

  --disable-mouse
  --enable-mouse=n
Force mouse disabilitation. By default the mouse is sensed at
least under xterm, and if libgpm is there mouse-reporting will
be available whenever possible (noticeably, on the Linux console).

  --disable-rcfile
  --enable-rcfile=n
Disable reading a run-command file (either from $(DIALOGRC) in
the environment, or from $(prefix)/lib/dialog/dialogrc or from
~/.dialogrc. Rc file reading is enabled by default.

Type "make". This will create a library archive called "libdialog.a"
and the binary "dialog".

If you want to build a shared library and to relink your executable with it,
you need to "make shared". This is not accomplished by default because
some novice users don't know about "LD_LIBRARY_PATH" and "ldconfig".

If the make fails then you'll have to personalize the Makefile for
your site or possibly modify the distribution in other ways. Note
that you could benefit from installing ncurses (1.9.4. or newer).

The documentation is distributed in postscript, info and texinfo source.
The "make" command creates Unix manuals as well. If you need a plain
ascii file you should "make dialog.txt" from within the doc directory.

Type "make install" to install the libraries, the binary and support
files. You'll need write permission on the installation directoryies
to do this. If installing shared libraries, you'll need permissions to
invoke "ldconfig" as well. If you didn't build the shared library, it
won't be installed.

The installation directories are determined by the "configure" script
and may be specified with the --prefix and --exec_prefix options to
"configure". See the Makefile for information on what directories
were chosen; you can override these choices by modifying the "prefix"
and "exec_prefix" variables in the Makefile.

Enjoy (or swear ;-)
