I have an 1868 running on 2.6. The mixer settings, and a bug in the
driver, are the key to get it to work. Start with digital audio, make
sure you can play a wave file - adjust the wave audio volume, the master
volume, and make sure the driver isn't muted. Once you've gone that far,
try the CD, but don't be discouraged if it doesn't work, or if it cuts out
the first time digital audio is played during a song. There is a bug in
the ESS driver - it mutes the card after playing any audio. The next
audio file played - it unmutes while playing, then mutes the card again
when finished.

I opened a GNAT report, 1139, which contains a patch I found for the
NetBSD driver. The applies flawlessly to the 2.6 source (ess.c) and
solves the problem.

For me, I added these commands to rc.local to set the mixer values at
startup, you might find them a good starting point:

   mixerctl -w outputs.master=144
   mixerctl -w inputs.cd=64

Hope that helps!

Brian

>Description:
Start playing a CD through an ESS soundcard. I have an ES1868.
Set the volume to a level at which you can play the CD. Then
play an audio file (a .wav file, for example). After the .wav
completes playing, the volume on the CD audio is reset to zero.
>How-To-Repeat:
In description - reset volume then play another audio file.
>Fix:
I found this patch searching either a NetBSD newsgroup or mailing
list. Worked for me! It applied directly to the 2.6 ess.c, I
        didn't have to change anything.
