Password Settings
You can use the Management Console to set up password parameters. Parameters you can change include:
- The minimum number of characters required
- Character inclusions
- Character repetition patterns
- Expiration periods
- Number of times an attempted connection fails before the system blocks further attempts by the same user
Setting password format rules
To set password format rules:
- In the toolbar, click the Settings button.
- In the contents list, select the server for which you want to set format rules.
- In the display pane, click the Password tab.
- In the area of the display pane labelled Format Rules, fill in the blanks, including the following:
- A minimum number of characters, letters or numbers.
- The number of times a character can be repeated, if at all.
- Check all the character-inclusion options to be applied.
- Click the now-active Save Changes button at the bottom of the display pane.
Setting password expiration rules
To set password expiration rules:
- In the toolbar, click the Settings button.
- In the contents list, select the server for which you want to set expiration rules.
- In the display pane, click the Password tab.
- In the area of the display pane labelled Expiration Rules, fill in the blanks, including:
- The time period (in days) before passwords automatically expire.
- The number of times a user can “recycle” the same password.
- The number of days after which a user can "recycle" the same password.
- Click the now-active Save Changes button at the bottom of the display pane.
Setting login rules
You can record a number in the Scalix server that represents the maximum number of failed login tries (by a mail client user) that trigger a system rejection of that user. (The client user will be warned that they must wait a set period of time before trying again.)
- In the toolbar, click the Settings button.
- In the contents list, select the server for which you want to set login rules.
- In the display pane, click the Password tab.
- In the area of the display pane labelled Login Rules, click in the Maximum number of login tries text field.

Type the number that represents the limit.
- Click the now-active Save Changes button at the bottom of the display pane.
