General Settings
Scalix uses the default domain name (entered during installation) to generate every Scalix user's mail address and authentication ID. If the domain name is “founder.net”, the default format for all current and new email addresses will be [first.lastname]@founder.net. If you change the default domain, Scalix immediately applies the change and updates all addresses.
Scalix allows two types of address generation rules:
-
Global (system-wide) address-generation rules
-
Mail node-specific address generation rules
You can store up to five global mail address-generation rules in your Scalix system, but only one mail node address-generation rule—which overrides any global rules currently in use.
To change the default domain name on the server:
- In the toolbar, click the Settings button.
- In the contents list, select the server for which you want to set the default server domain name.
- In the display pane, the General tab appears by default.
- In the area of the display pane labelled Server Domain Setting, locate the Default Domain field and delete the current domain name.
-
Type the replacement name text.
- Click the now-active Save Changes button at the bottom of the display pane.
You can modify the rules that control how a user’s name is formatted for display and as an authentication ID. By default, the display name and authentication ID both use the user’s name in different formats (first, last and -optionally- the Middle Initial). You can set these rules with the Display Name Rule and Authentication ID Rule dropdown menus.
To modify the Display Name Rule setting:
- In the toolbar, click the Settings button.
- In the contents list, select the server for which you want to modify a user name setting.
- In the display pane, the General tab appears by default.
- In the area of the display pane labelled User Name Settings, open the Display Name Rule dropdown menu.
-
Select the preferred user name format.
- Click the now-active Save Changes button at the bottom of the display pane.
To modify the Authentication ID Rule setting:
- In the toolbar, click the Settings button.
- In the contents pane, select the server for which you want to modify the authentication ID setting.
- In the display pane, the General tab appears by default.
- In the area of the display pane labelled User Name Settings, open the Authentication ID Rule dropdown menu.
-
Select the preferred user name format.
- Click the now-active Save Changes button at the bottom of the display pane.
To activate the use of an Authentication ID Domain name when your email client users log into the Scalix server:
- In the toolbar, click the Settings button.
- In the contents list, select the server for which you want to modify the authentication ID domain name setting.
- In the display pane, the General tab appears by default.
- In the area of the display pane labelled User Name Settings, review the text in the Authentication ID Domain field (which automatically displays the Domain Name recorded in the Settings [Server Name] General tab).
-
If you want email clients to log in to the system with a full authentication ID that incorporates the domain name, click the checkbox (if it is empty.) If, however, you have been using domain name as part of an authentication ID, and you want to stop, clear the checkbox if it has an “X” in it.
-
If you want to modify the domain name text for authentication purposes, do so now. Remember to communicate the text to all your users.
- Click the now-active Save Changes button at the bottom of the display pane.
| ALERT: |
If you activated the domain name inclusion in all authentication iDs, you must communicate to your users that they must update their client account settings accordingly. Be sure to send them a sample of what their login ID should look like. |
This set of options determines how new email accounts are assigned an address. You can pick a user name rule, then modify the domain name appended to the address. You can create up to five rules that control how Scalix generates a user's default email address.
To modify mail address settings:
- In the toolbar, click the Settings button.
- In the contents list, click a [server name].
- In the display pane, the General tab appears by default.
-
In the area of the display pane labelled Mail Address Settings, open the Mail Address Rule dropdown menu.
-
Select the preferred user name format.
-
Review the text in the Mail Address Domain field.
-
Edit this text if needed. (It is based on the domain name recorded in the General tab.)
- Click the now-active Save Changes button at the bottom of the display pane.
To add another, alternate email address format, as needed:
- In the toolbar, click the Settings button.
- In the contents list, click a [server name].
- In the display pane, the General tab appears by default.
- In the area of the display pane labelled Mail Address Settings, click Add Rule.
-
A new, blank row appears below the existing row(s).
- Fill in the settings—both address rule and domain name.
- Click the now-active Save Changes button at the bottom of the display pane.
You can use these alternate mail addresses later for creating or modifying user accounts.
To improve the speed and responsiveness of your email service, you can enable the Scalix SmartCache feature, which keeps a copy of your mailbox on your client machine as well as on the server, allowing you to work off of your local machine rather than the server.
With SmartCache, the system checks in to the server only when sending and receiving new messages, meaning fewer trips to and from the sever. This not only speeds up client performance, but also reduces bandwidth usage.
To enable SmartCache:
- In the toolbar, click Settings.
- In the display pane, click the General tab.
- Under the SmartCache Control Settings area, put a check mark before Enable SmartCache.
- At the bottom of the display pane, click the now-active Save Changes button.
