== Happy Camel ==

= About =
Happy Camel is intended to combine your digital camera with your GPS device. If
you feed it a list of digital photos and a tracklog, it figures out where these
images were taken. It can embed this position in the EXIF-data of your photos
and create a .KMZ file for Google Earth or Google Maps displaying your photos at
the right positions along the tracklog.

Happy Camel is distributed under the GNU General Public License.

= Installation =

Happy Camel requires a few third-party tools and pacakges for some of its
functionality. Please install them as needed (if you don't have them, Happy
Camel should still work, albeit without these options).
- Python Imaging Library (PIL); this is needed for producing Google Earth files.
A lot of Linux distributions have this library installed by default or offer
an easy way to install it. Otherwise, it can be obtained from
  www.pythonware.com
- Exiftool: Happy Camel has an experimental built-in library for reading and
writing the image metadata, which can be invoked woth the --faster switch
(and, incidently, is much faster). However, if this does not work properly,
or if you want to read images which are not in JPG or TIFF format, you need to
install Exiftool. This tool can also be readily installed by most Linux
distibutions. Otherwise, you can get it from
  www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
As a side note, this tool is really great to have around and I would recommend
it to everyone who wants to play with photo metadata.

The installation of Happy Camel itself is similar to that of most other Python
scripts. That mostly boils down to simply running the setup.py script first with
the build parameter, and than as root with the install parameter. Happy Camel
is purely Python-based, so nothing needs to be built. Therefore, running as
root:
  ./setup.py install
should do the trick.
