Q: Does lum require root priviledges
A: the lum daemon does not require any elevated priveleges. In fact it is
recommended to run it as unprivileged, as possible.

Q: What does "Bind failed" mean?
A: It means, that the syscall to bind(2) failed. This usually happens, if
either the port is already bound by another process, or if lum lacks the
permission to bind to the desired port (only root may use the ports below
1024).
---
Q: Sometimes lum says "Broken pipe", what does that mean?
A: It means, lum received the SIGPIPE signal ;-). Unless you stumpled over a
bug in the network code (very unlikely) it means, that lum could not pipe
the list of destinguished names through to a job. Either because the program
belonging to the corresponding job could not be started, or because it
didn't accept the data on standard input.
